Sick Fix- Demo(lish)
Review by Royce Icon

Sick Fix are a loud and noisy female fronted hardcore band based out of Baltimore and D.C. They mix fast thrashy music with emotional and political themed vocals and an overall interesting musical dynamic.

Demo(lish) is to the best of my knowledge their first release, and it totally fucking kills. It’s technically a demo, but it doesn’t really sound like it. The mixing is a bit low at times, but that’s about it. Everything comes through just fine: The vocals are violent and powerful, the guitars are fast and super aggro, and the drums are a complete pounding onslaught.

This thing is only about six minutes long, but it’s more addictive than crack. You cannot listen to it just once. As soon as your ears venture into these short blasts of punk rock perfection, you will NEED to hear them over and over again. As I am writing this review I am on my 8th consecutive listen to it, and I’m not planning on stopping soon.

One great thing about Sick Fix is the fact that they don’t have a typical hardcore sound. They don’t mind bringing thrash or even noise-rock elements into the mix. They don’t stick to the typical breakdown mold and they play with real ardor, energy, and sincerity that I really admire.

All in all, Demo(lish) fucking rules! Go to their site and download a copy, or better yet, buy a copy. They sound even better live than they do recorded, so if they play in your town you should see them for sure.

Whenever I go to the Legion of Doom, I have a good time. Unlike normal clubs or bars, the atmosphere of the legion is totally inviting and kickass, even for an anti-social asshole like myself. This show was my fourth or so time at the place, and I really had no knowledge of what any of the bands sounded like. I’m really glad I came, because it turned out to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen by far.

ddt.jpg

The first band to play was DDT (Damien’s Dinner Time). DDT more or less seems to be comprised of most of the members of Triceratops, a local hardcore band everyone keeps telling me kicks ass, though I still haven’t seen them yet. They played with a lot of energy and vigor, and the dudes definitely had a sense of humor to them. Their sound was pretty punk, with some more metalish and screamo stuff thrown in at times. Their set was short, but effectively so. Cool stuff for sure.

brokeasajoke.jpg

The next band to play was Broke as as Joke, which was essentially DDT again only with the members switching duties and an addition and subtraction. The sound this time around was much more grindcore/metal, but it was equally as solid. The set was again effectively short, and pretty fun.

tangledlines.jpg

As cool as the first two bands were, The Tangled Lines totally blew them away. Within the first couple seconds of their set, I knew that this was the main event. These Dresden natives played socially aware hardcore punk that was loud, fast, and overall intense. They played with such ardor and energy, I just couldn’t help but thrash around like a total idiot, something I haven’t really done in a long time at a show.

It was like they had me by the throat and wouldn’t let go the entire time they were playing. It was fucking awesome. I was especially impacted by the energy of their vocalist Luise, who sounded like a kind of demented german punk version of the girl from Melt Banana with her wild high octave yelling. They ended their set with a David Hasselhoff cover, which they were actually able to pull off. It sounded awesome as fucking hell.

I have no clue how long the Tangled Lines played, but I know I was sad as hell when their set ended. It was so cathartic and awesome, I just wanted to hug the whole band and thank them for giving me such a cool experience. One of the best bands I’ve ever seen live by far.

iobject.jpg

After the total juggernaut that was the Tangled Lines, I wasn’t honestly expecting any of the other bands to be nearly as brutally kickass. But I was definitely wrong.
I Object! delivered a set that was equally skull-crushing, if possibly more so in certain departments. The whole band was just completely on fire, pouring out song after song of lightning fast politically fueled hardcore punk with little or no breathing room in between songs, save for a few intros and really cool riffs about society. They had a kind of early 80’s and late 70’s sound, kind of like a mixture of the early Dischord scene and the early L.A. scene.

Barb, the vocalist of the group, had an awesome tone to her voice, it kind of reminded me a bit of Selene Vigil from 7 Year Bitch in that it had a similar rawness. She was a total force of nature, thrashing around the stage and really generating a colossal amount of energy. The entire band was generating this huge energy, it was awesome. They had me in a kind of trance the entire time they played, I loved it. I just kept jumping up and down and hitting myself, it was awesome. It’s so rare to see a band that seems so into what they’re doing, it was definitely inspiring.

losethetude.jpg

After I Object! left the stage, Lose the Tude (which features member of local punk band Delay) played a really solid set of fun dual vocal hardcore punk that was pretty cool. Lots of energy, just generally fun. I actually liked their set more than I dug the Delay set I saw a few weeks back or so. As much as I dug it I was pretty well drained by then, and I was ready to go home by the time their set ended.

I didn’t go home just yet though because I wanted to catch The Flukes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really into their brand of pop punk much, but I did appreciate one or two of their kind of Kerplunk! era Green Day songs. Definitely the low point of the gig for me….

Overall, I had a pretty good time. I Object! and the Tangled Lines were totally amazing, they both gave two of the most killer performances I’ve ever seen. The majority of the other bands kicked a good portion of ass as well. A gig I won’t forget for sure…

Why I Love Type O Negative by Royce Icon

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 11:31 am

Everyone who is really into music has had an artist or band that was somewhat of a gateway drug, something that opened you up to experiences and thoughts that you simply never new existed. For me, Type O Negative was one such band.

I bought my copy of World Coming Down when I was 13 and I had no idea what to expect. I had seen the band compared to Sabbath in Metal Edge, but that was about it. I think I bought it mainly because I liked the cover and I thought Peter Steele looked cool in the pictures I had seen of him. (Hey, give me some slack. I was fucking 13!)

Anyway, I bought the cd and went home and immediately put it in the cd player.
As soon as I put the cd in, it started skipping. I was pissed. Right when I was about to knock my cd player across the room, a voice appeared on the cd, saying “SUCKER!!!”. Then the heaviest, slowest drums I had ever heard in my life started to play, followed by nefarious church organs and low, ominous guitar. I was totally blown away.

Within the span of an hour or so, my view on music totally changed. Before I put in the cd, my favorite band had been Pantera. Music was all about being angry and fucking shit up. Music was just a cathartic release for my lame teenage angst. But by the time this Type O cd was over, all of that changed. Now I saw a much larger part of the musical spectrum, a wider range of emotions.

Type O Negative weren’t afraid of being self defacing or emotional, but they approached everything with some kind of bizarre nihilistic humor. They saw the world for the tragic yet beautiful place that it is, and it gave me a much needed kick in the teeth. It sounds pathetic, but in a way I really grew through their music. I spent many a night just listening to their albums and drifting off, contemplating various possibilities and situations.

As time has went on I’ve went through a pretty wide evolution in my musical taste,
and it’s a road that is far from over. But however my tastes change, Type O are a constant, and I’ll always remember what those dudes from Brooklyn did for me.

Bikini Kill- Reject All American Review by Royce Icon

Filed under: Reviews — admin @ 9:10 pm

In the past I’ve had somewhat of a love/ hate relationship with Bikini Kill. I’ve always admired their aesthetics to a degree, and the fact that they’ve inspired so many women to make music is definitely a plus for them in this mono-gender art scene world of ours. But I also was always kind of freaked out by what seemed
like excessive hard line preaching on their part.

Anyway, I saw a copy of “Reject All American” for super cheap so I got it. And I gotta say, I’m fucking blown away. Listening to this album really made me feel like a jackass, as I had only heard random mp3’s and whatnot before hand and I thought I basically knew what they sounded like. I was totally wrong. Bikini Kill were a total force, and they were definitely best represented in the album format, as most bands are.

Musically this is somewhat standard fast punk stuff with some slower cleaner numbers, but it’s what’s behind the sounds that makes it amazing. Every song here drips with total passion and sincerity, and it’s really inspiring. I don’t agree with everything that’s said on this record, but that’s not the point. The point is that Bikini Kill meant what they fucking said. And that alone is something that deserves respect. I just feel lame for noticing it all a decade after they broke up……

Bella Sin Interview by Royce Icon

Filed under: Interviews — admin @ 3:28 am

For starters, tell us a bit about yourself. What kind of things are you into? What keeps you going?

Well let me see here. Ok! The name Is Bella Sin or Beautiful Sin…
I have been doing modeling for some time now and I have been having so much fun with it and not to mention have met some very interesting people thru out this amazing journey. I’m also a burlesque performer; I have been doing that for about 2 years…As the “Lead Pussy” for Le Femme Mystique Burlesque in Ohio.

Now Let’s Get Personal!
I’m Mexican born and raised. I moved to the states when I was 13.
Denver Colorado actually, Then I moved to Ohio in late 2003.
I’m into a lot really, As any woman, fashion is a must with me…Make-Up is not just not make up is more of an Art!! Music mostly local bands, burlesque, poetry, reading, jewelry making, Fashion Design, Gun Movies, Chess, Horror Movies, I LOVE TO DANCE.. just to make it clear!!
I’m into the old and new … revival!! Antiques, Art and then some!!
Supporting local artist, bands and companies.

What keeps me going? At times that is a hard question because it applies to so many faces in my life, but in my personal is my family. But what keeps me going in the modeling world would have to be the statement myself and other models have been trying to make. I look to inspire that girl or woman out there that does not think that much about herself and have her get some confidence… Hey if I can do it so can you!

How did you get into fetish modeling? Was it something you always wanted to do, or did it happen more by chance? How long have you been modeling now?

I don’t really label my self one type of model I love to do any kind of shoots.
My mother always told me you take really good pictures, you know when family tells you that you just blow it off. It was not till one of my boyfriends took a picture of me and totally made me take a long hard look at myself. It was then that I realize I can do something more then a pretty picture. I had my first shoot with Jason Noble and he is the one I credit for getting me stared.

It was some thing I can say I wanted to do, but never did have the guts for!
As I said I was a heavy at the time… but that changed quickly. I believe that there is something I have to achieve and chance is never something real!! I wanted to and I did!!

I have modeled for over 3 years now actually! WOW! I can remember my first shoot… I was so nervous. .giggles!

Tell us a bit about your burlesque troop. What do you like about the
burlesque medium, and are you at all inspired by the burlesque dancers
or the past?

Le Femme Mystique Burlesque is base out of Akron Ohio, It was the idea of my friend Jasmine and myself. We have been here for 2 years and I can tell you all my girls are amazing bless their hearts for putting up with me. This burlesque troupe was created not like all the others… We wanted to turn old into new… but thru all my research and work, I found that we had to make it different something that will appeal to the public today.

We do old music and new, in one of our shows you can hear Frank Sinatra, Nina Simore, Jazz, Soul, Nine Inch Nails, Dresden Dolls, David Rose, Go-Go and then some.
I know its and odd mix but it works out nicely.

We are modern schoolgirls with old school charms that bring an exciting burlesque performance to you. We are here to let you in on glamour and sexiness, charm and beauty, love and class from real women that enjoy our curves almost as much as you will! We will educate you on old school charms and darling beauties. We accomplish all of this with our clothes on.

Our show consists of tradition with an edge. Our full figured dancers/model will make your heart race with every shimmy. Still fairly new to the industry, we are looking to start out slow and easy so we can build to an explosion, unlike the mainstream that rush in fast and hard (we all know fast and hard is fun …but it’s better to start as friendly lovers)!

Le Femme Mystique Burlesque uses a wide musical selection to bring the traditional 30’s style tease from history to pop with our own unique flair. Amazing girls and showmanship are the hallmark of Le Femme Mystique Burlesque. Also I’m sure by now you are saying… The is wrong in French!! What? You can’t spell? No, No, No!! This is why I personally misspelled it.

The Name: We are flattered by your concerns and to lay them aside here is the scoop: “Le” is the pejorative term meaning “the”. As you are aware (I’m sure) each language has many different dialects. Due to the number of French dialects involved and probability that “La” would be largely mispronounced by Americans (la is pronounced “lahh”, le is pronounced “luhh”) we went with the neutral rather than the feminine to reduce the “dumbass” potential - in other words, “the feminine mystique” as an entity. Eventually we are prepared to address that grammatical issue but for now we feel it’s the right decision.

In other words, no we’re not retarded, yes we did it deliberately, and it is, in fact, possible for women to possess both brains and beauty. —

We are looking to change minds while we have you in a trace from our hips shaking.
Some people have told me I’m a “Fancy” Stripper, Which is not it… burlesque is the art of the tease… the art of bump and grind… being sexy and beautiful with out being nude… the fact that you have class and are paying tribute to some of the many woman that went thru that stage to make it possible for you to be on there now. Don’t get me wrong here I still love strippers!! And I will say YOU GO GIRLS!!

Yes… by now you know I’m very inspired by the old burlesque dancers!!
Every one can say Betty Page but I have some what of a list here… tee-hee!!
Mind you these are not just people I admire… I look up to
them and thank them for what they have done to make this possible for me. I have spent countless hours looking up their names… Looking at their pictures… Getting to know the story of these people.
They are an inspiration to me!!

See I told you it was a list!

You’ve described yourself as a “plus-sized” model. Have you ever
experienced any turbulence with photographers or any other people due
to your body type? Also, how do you feel about female body standards
in the media and popular culture?

I have actually started to use “Voluptus”, I have experience things like this with photographers, one in particular that will remain nameless but he said to me “I don’t work with “FAT” models. Sorry!! That made me so mad… I was like how dare you say that to me, let alone another woman? I was out for blood there for a while.

But then I kind of got the point… You have to work extra when you are a Voluptus model.. I often find we have better facial expressions and hand and feet coordination along with posture … we have to know these things, we have to hide imperfections that other regular models do not have. Regular models have the, “I can stand and I look grand and beautiful!!” No… I can’t do that… I have to actually pose to make the shot work out.. and I will do anything in my power to get that shot!
If you have confidence in your self and you know that you are doing great things people don’t try to pull you down… but show them that little piece of weakness you might have and they will drag you down. I don’t fell bad that people call me Fat! I see them all as ignorant… at times I say… “Have you looked at the mirror lately or did you break it again?”
I have learned to come back with punch lines that are respectful and funny! But you have to, someone might like you one day and the next day be calling you all the names under the sun and then some. Don’t make fun of people that are Voluptus, Plus Size, Over Weight… Some of those people are more beautiful inside then you can think.

Female body standards In the media and popular culture… I have a big problem with them actually!! When you say that you have to be a specific weight, height, size, color please!!! We are not perfect and I hate to break any ones dreams of grand perfection .. We WILL NEVER BE PERFECT! We are but humans and we are all beautiful in our own way.

Look with in yourself and find who you are and enhance that, Yeah!! Really it’s not that hard. You have to keep in mind we live in such a place today that image is everything and if you don’t have it you aren’t anything.

I hate to say but even in the alternative world we have it.
There is a small but strong army of women that are trying to change this and I know some of them. Don’t feed into it! You need to know that you are beautiful and don’t listen to those people on the TV… Yes is nice to be thin but you know it’s not mandatory and necessary . You are as beautiful as you want to be and you know that better then i. Admire, Create, Make It Your Own.-Bella Sin

You’ve done various different kinds of modeling shoots, from more
artistic oriented to fashion based. What kinds of shoots do you like
the most?

It’s really hard to say I have a favorite one! They are all different in a way, but there was one that stands out the most out of all. It was the first time shooting with a female photographer by myself. Jen from Studio J made me feel like no other photographer… she has what I’m looking for in a photographer. She has a very bright mind. As you might see in some of the sets I sent in. Some of the greater shots are “Senorita Sin” and “Fallen.”

I have never seen myself thru a woman’s eyes before. It was a welcome change.
I think I like all the shoots I do. They are all different and the way the photographer looks at me is what matters to me… I know it’s a picture but I want it to be his/her vision with my twist, but anything that involves corsets, heels and make up with a dash of odd posing .. I’m there!!

Who are your favorite photographers that you’ve worked with so far?

Yet again another list,

Jason Noble from Noble Images
Jen from Studio J
Uncle Dreg
Dennis Surrener
After 6 Photography
KRN
Arrested Photography

Have you ever experienced any shoots that were particularly horrible?

Yes!! I will leave it at that…

How do you feel about the fetish “scene” in general?

There are so many variations of the scene now of days and I happen to enjoy all variations of it. There are different people in every one and the music changes as well. But really at times I wonder where this might go. If you pay attention to the everyday world the scene has influence everything greatly. Not to mention it has not been in its underground layer… Every one is a participant and an on looker.

When it comes to having feelings for it.. Yes I do have a love for it deep inside this little black heart of mine. Why? When I was first introduce to the scene… I was in love!! People liked and did things I had enjoyed by myself. Keep in mind it did not fit every well in my family that I was walking around with big boots, black eyeliner, fishnets and big hair.

When I came upon it I felt I had much to research about it. So I hit the books and found so much rich history behind it. The first thing that always has my attention is the music. I love the music and I can’t wait to hear more!!! The Fashion was the second thing to take me by surprise…not to mention the culture.
I love the scene… I can’t wait to see what it will evolve to next.

Do you have any advice for beginning fetish models?

You have to be confident, true to your self, know what you stand for.
You don’t have to do what millions of others have done, think of inventive ways to come up with photo sets. Make them your own!!

Don’t go alone to shoots; take some one with you NEVER EVER GO ALONE!!
Make sure you look at the photographer’s history, talk to models that have shot with the photographer before, be selective in the photographers and shoots you do.

Make sure you are well prepared when you go to the shoots not to mention, bring everything and the kitchen sink. You never know what you might need or come up with when you have all that you own. Well clothing wise!!

Learn about the photo release laws and forms, know to ask for them and READ THEM!!!
If you don’t agree with some thing on the form, cross it out… make sure you talk to them and tell them what you want. Yes it might be Time For Prints but you are still the model you still should make your voice heard you are not just a pretty thing… You have a brain!

If you shoot outside make sure you don’t shoot somewhere you are not familiar with. Have the photographer come to you and take him to places you know and are familiar with, also make sure you tell some one where you go and what you are doing. Safety is always a must, Get all the contact information from the photographer and also make sure to tell them when you need your pictures by.

The most important thing to know is have fun with it!!
Practice when you are at home by your self, be skilled in Make-Up and hair- Wigs are great to have for shoots, also make sure you are ready with your make up and hair when you get there. Make sure you act professional and not to mention work hard to make every shot good!! Take direction well, come up with ideas and always make sure to thank your photographer after you are done. You need him as much as he needs you!!!

If you have confidence it will come thru the camera no matter what size you are and what you look like make sure you always feel confident because it will come thru in the picture!!! Also remember to network and do not act like a diva. Do research and talk back and forth with the photographer about ideas and outfits.
Really if you are interested look into what you want to do and then go for it!!!

What are some of your kinks or fetishes, if you have any?

Yes I do actually!! Oh… I think every one does.
But mine are some what particular; eyeliner on a boy is quite interesting.
Men with all black dress clothing, not to mention bass players, giggles.
I love men in uniform… that is a paramedic uniform… they save lives with those hands baby!!! But really the most amazing fetish is restraint and blind fold, but at times not on me. Also feather tickle you know (*eyebrow raises*), Long hair at times is a great way to get my attention.. not long like short but well groomed.

I also happen to enjoy being in charge … I love the idea of top and torture!!
Anything that says body paint in the label is interesting as well!!!

I know many models get some creepy stalkers and weird-ass emails. Have
you experienced anything you’d like to share that was particularly
creepy/ funny/ weird?

Well I get many, but some are just dawn right confusing and far more then odd.
I can share some of the things I have been emailed.

How do you feel about birth control?

Yes, every one should be on it.
I actually believe it should be free!!!!!
Every woman has a choice in her life and this is one we all should be for, I think birth control is amazing, Men should also take there own respective birth control.

Educate your self!! Find books about sex and other topics, avoid the issue and protect your self. Also go to the doctor and get tested, no matter what there is always a risk!!
There are millions of kids out there that are homeless and have no parents, choose to adopt and to become a happy parent. When you are ready!!

What do you think about downloading, MP3s and the RIAA?

I really like to go out and support the artist and buy the CD and go to the concerts, I really don’t like to download because it takes me forever. But if that is the only way that I will get the song then I will make sure I have a paid service and everything is legal. Music should be free yes, but we should not take advantage of it. They have worked so hard to make this happen…. Don’t over do it!!

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) They are trying to protect the rights of other recording artist, how would you like it if some one stole something you have been working on for years.
I have no problem with it, but I do think is a little silly how some times associations can take things to far.

What is your opinion on the current state of American society?

When you are awake at 4:43am is not always the best idea to talk about The American Society, All I can say is “Shut the darn TV and go have dinner with the family”. I don’t think there is such a thing as family values, Family is important and will always be there… but I don’t really see a lot of that going on here. Sitting in front of the TV is not a very good idea of parenting or at that spending time with your family.

Also the fact that children have been growing up so fast, I mean shit!! I saw a 12 year old that is some what well into growing in her body, but excuse the language she was dressed like a whore. She complemented on my outfit and I happen to say “how old are you?” she told me her age and I told go put something that covered her up and to take the dolls out of her closet. I’m amazed that in the dinner conversation that she was having with her mother was about how she wants to have sex with her boyfriend that is 16. The mother said… “Fuck his brains out…hunny” Hello!! I’m going nuts?
The kids need parents not friends!!

As an immigrant I have a very different look at this society, where I come from there is no such thing as safety at times. You have to keep in mind in Mexico that American dream is glory and that is why so many people come here.

I think that this is a country made by immigrants; I see them as day to day life.
They come here to work to help there families… why don’t we lend them a hand after all they are only human as well!!

I don’t see why there is a war going on, there is so many people that have passed and died. Family members, brothers, sisters, friends, husband and mothers. There has to be a rational solution. Really since 9-11 everything has gone to hell!! But I’m sure the people in charge of this country are trying there best to protect every thing that the United States represents and stands for. Don’t forget is the people who shape there country!!

If you knew the world was ending in a week, what would you do?

Find Trent Reznor and make him play me an unplug version of “Sin”, Eat Ice Cream, Spend time with my family, Do Trent Reznor, Watch Britney and Paris go at it!! Look for the meaning of life. Down a bottle of cuevo in 10 minutes, Dance till I break my hip, make love to someone, tell every one that I love them, Jump in a creek, take off my top and run thru the street screaming in Spanish.

Wear pink and take a picture, make a person happy, swim naked, join the polar bear club, do one last shoot with Trent Reznor, tell my mother every thing I have done and why, find Waldo, find Bigfoot, make waldo and Bigfoot fall in love, Meet up with my friends and party till the morning comes, Hold my little one thru the last day.

Ask what the hell is William Hung doing in the music industry, look for a real Transylvanian to kiss, roll a million bowling balls down a hill, run around with a shirt that said “I rule you suck”.. Wait I already do that!!!
I think I would do any thing I can do… but as you see, I would like to talk to Trent Reznor for a long time. Really I just think the man is a genius.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I would want to be able to move things with my mind and not to mention control time, that would be so amazing. Can you think of the possibilities!! I will never be late, I can do a lot at the same time…. Ahahhah!! Heaven!! I think I would also like to have mind reading powers…that would be cool as well!!

What are some things you hate about other people?

People that are jealous and like to spread rumors, then talk to you like you are there best friend. Those need to go!! You have to be true and welcome every one nicely, but people now of days can’t be trusted some of them are after what they can get.
So word of caution, be careful!.

What are some things you hate about yourself?

oh god!! There must be another list some where here… hmmm
I’m way to short!! I forget things that don’t interest me, shinny things and that I have to much clothing in my house. Giggles!! Also I can’t manage to sit still for a moment… that needs to stop!!

Is there anything else you would like to say or plug?

Trauma 2006 review

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a pretty anti-social person. Hell, that’s being too nice. In all honestly I’m a misanthropic asshole. I really loathe being in groups of people and as a result I don’t go to a lot of gigs and I don’t usually dig clubbing either. But I was attracted to the BDSM nature of the Trauma event, so I decided I’d give it a chance. And I am happy to report that I was only somewhat disappointed.

It’s generally known that you don’t really show up on time for most gigs or events because they usually don’t actually start until at least an hour or two after the listed start time. But regardless, my friends and I arrived early anyway. Because of this, I spent the first hour and a half or so just kind of sitting around listening to the shitty EBM music they were playing, amusing myself by playing balloon tag with my friend Alyssa. There was some shitty rock band playing below in the basement, but I wasn’t bored enough to willingly digest their asinine soulless music. I mean, they really sucked. They were like pop punk metal. There wasn’t one moment where the vocalist didn’t have a beer in hand during their set. No thanks.

By around 10:30 or so, things started to kick off a bit. More people showed up and the bondage began downstairs. The shitty band was still playing, but I didn’t mind as much since I got to see some femme domme spanking a girl’s bare ass. The bondage was definitely one of the highlights of the event for me, though I have to say I wish things would have gotten a bit more kinky, intense and sexual. The atmosphere was pretty open to sexuality, and I really wanted to see more than whipping and ass spanking. Not that I didn’t enjoy seeing girls and dudes being whipped and spanked, I was just hoping for some insertion or something a bit closer to sex. It was still pretty cool though.

By around eleven or so burlesque performers began to do their thing on the upper floor stage, and that was definitely another highlight of the event. I got to see a lot of people on stilts, the most noticeable was a couple who did a really cool marionette performance, with the girl being the puppet and the guy on stilts controlling her movements. It was very well executed and rather remarkable. I really loved the way the girl danced in a jagged, almost contortionist manner.

But there was more than people on stilts going on on the top floor for sure. There was a couple of pretty burlesque performers that were rather spiffy too, though unfortunately I don’t remember their names. The first girl I saw did a nice routine with an umbrella that was cute in a cheesecake kind of way, but I unfortunately only got to see the end of it.

The second girl started off her routine with hoola hoops and a guy in a gorilla costume. She and the gorilla messed around for a bit and then the gorilla went away and the focus was put on her. I had never seen anyone perform with a hoola hoop before and to be honest I always thought it would be kind of boring and silly to watch, but she completely proved this assumption wrong with her set.

This girl knew what she was doing and I was fascinated by watching her move in and out of the hoops and then by her ability to twirl the hoops on her torso. At some point she took off her bra, which of course made it even more entertaining than it already was. I really admired the muscles of her body, and it really was cool to watch her work them. As a finally of sorts the hoola hoop girl was joined by a girl in a sheer pantyhose suit who started twirling some neon ball thingies. They played together for awhile and then their performances sadly ended. One of my main beefs with the event was that they didn’t have a bit more of this stuff going on, because I was really into it.

After the burlesque performance was over I went back downstairs and watched more of the bdsm action. Then Only Flesh started to play. I had read a lot about the band and heard a lot, but this was the first time I had seen them. I was kind of disappointed by the lack of suspensions, since they’re notorious for doing them onstage, and that’s partially kind of why I wanted to see them. I guess they couldn’t do it due to the set up, or they just didn’t feel like it or something. Regardless, they were still pretty cool to see, especially due to Rev. Lower’s GWARish costume that was full of spikes, especially in his crotch region.

The band did two sets, one set of their more EMB-electro material, and one of their more metal/punk stuff. During the former set I made the somewhat uncharacteristic decision to start dancing in the little area that was full of balloons. Within a couple minutes of doing so, I found myself dancing with a pretty goth girl and was were more or less dry humping for a couple minutes. It lasted basically one song and then she went away, but it was definitely rather enjoyable, even if I did feel kind of silly walking around with the massive boner it gave me.

I ventured back upstairs for a little bit during Only Flesh’s second set, but then I came back down and watched the last half of it. Musically it was okay, but not exceptional to be honest. A mixture of punkish stuff and a bit more metal parts. Rev.’s vocals kind of reminded me of Marilyn Manson at times, if he were more garage rock. I enjoyed their performance overall though, and the fact that they did a medley that combined Quiet Riot’s Bang your head with the Misfit’s Halloween made me dig them even more.

After Only Flesh’s set I ventured back upstairs to watch the halloween contest. There were some interesting costumes, but nothing that I thought was super cool, save for the hitleresque/ Ilsa girl and the dude who was dressed like a Centauri diplomat from Babylon 5. The drag queen who hosted the event was cool as well, she had a very divaesque charm to her that I normally find repugnant but with her I liked.

After the Halloween contest (which turned out to be a five way draw or so), I went back downstairs to watch the Bondage 101 seminar, which was an older man with a blue beard demonstrating how to properly tie someone up. I thought it was interesting, but you could barely hear him because they were still playing music loudly and he had no amplification and a naturally low voice. I was a few feet from him and he was still rather inaudible.

When the bondage seminar was over the girls of Evolved began their set, and I have to say it was by far the most disappointing thing about the night. It was just a bunch of girls having a food fight while semi-naked. And half of the girls had an icky kind of Suicide Girls thing to them anyway. My friends and I got pretty damn bored by them and we went ahead and left about five minutes into their routine.

All in all it was a pleasurable experience, more pleasurable than most public outings tend to be for me. I definitely intend on going to the event next year if possible.

In the Realm of the Senses Review by Royce Icon

Filed under: Reviews — admin @ 4:23 am

I can’t tell you how many times I saw this movie in the video store, picked it up, and then decided not to rent it. I did this probably dozens of times. I think the main reason was that I just kind of assumed that it would be a fluffy drama for some reason, due to the title. Well, as they say, assumption is the mother of all fuck ups.
In the Realm of the Senses couldn’t be farther from a fluffy drama. In fact, there is quite a lot of reason that it is one of the most infamously banned films in the world, and is still considered extreme in Japan, even by modern standards.

The film was one of the original films about the famous prostitute Sada who castrated a lover because she felt he was going to leave her. Mostly the film is intense fucking with lots of closeups of the main male character’s little brown potato dick, but it’s still pretty interesting. The ending is probably the coolest part, as well as the old lady being fucked.

It does get boring after awhile, and it could have been edited down to a better hour or honestly half an hour long film, but as it stands it is worth watching if only for historical context, and because it’s pretty damn extreme for the early seventies. It’s not a film I’ll watch over and over, but I consider it a necessary film to watch for sure.

Lies (Gojitmal) Review by Royce Icon

Filed under: Reviews — admin @ 3:54 am

You know, there really aren’t enough films about bdsm. I’m not an especially avid participant in the subculture, but I’m a rather interested voyeur and it’s a subject I really enjoy in the right context. So you combine this with my interest in Asian cinema and it’s no surprise that I really enjoyed Lies, one of the most recent films by South Korean filmmaker Sun-Woo Jang.

The plot of Lies is pretty basic: it follows the sexual relationship between J, a 40 something sculptor, and Y, an 18 year old student. But while the film is basically focused on their sexual exploits, it never gets boring, though at times it does drag a bit. You see plenty of somewhat intense beatings given and taken by both parties, both switching between dominant and submissive, as well as lots and lots of sex. There are some emotional scenes as well, and you get to witness breakdowns by both characters.

There aren’t many really cool extra features on the dvd, but there is a really cool rant fron the director about how the film was meant as a total fuck you to polite conformist Korean society. And a really cool fuck you it is. If a film about two Koreans getting into some kinky violences seems like your thing, then I highly recommend you watch this flick.

Snot. Get Some CD

Snot

Get Some

Geffen Records

By Shannon

Get Some is a wonderful example of musical styles fusing. Punk, hardcore, metal and funk come together on this disc that keeps the pressure on until the unexpected track Get Some Keez. My personal favorites are I Jus’ Lie and Tecato. This album is a good balance between fury and melody.

It’s unfortunate that Lynn Strait died before this band could expand and create more great music.  Despite Lynn’s passing in 1998, the work the band did has perservered.  If you like this album, check out the tribute to Lynn, Strait Up.  The diversity of artists who took part in the tribute is a testament to how much of a legacy was left by this music.
